Korea 1954

Thursday, August 20th, 2015

During the year following the Korean War I was 17/18. It was in 1954. I was in the Air force serving in Korea. I walked, hitch-hiked whenever possible. I took hundred of pictures. I spotted this little Korean boy. I believe he was an orphan. He just looked at me with those big brown eyes. I will never forget. He did not speak or wave as I walked away–just kept looking at me.. I believe strongly in my God. I know he watches over the sparrow and I must trust that he watched over that little boy!—olRoff

Little Billy

Thursday, August 13th, 2015

In a little while I going to be posting a painting that resulted from listening to the following three people. They are to blame! (1) my friend Master Artist Steven Chandler. He has told me over and over to paint people from my childhood, “You can do it Roff!” (2) my friend Master Artist Louis Vuittonet, “Just let go and do it!” and (3) our beautiful granddaughter, Lauren encouraging me and laughing all the way through!—I am going to show you my rendition of “Little Billy”. Yes, he existed in my childhood and nobody, nobody could beat him—just keep as far out of his way as possible.–The painting is almost done!

Savannah 2002 American Folk Art Society conference

Wednesday, August 12th, 2015

We were in Savannah in 2002 attending the American Folk Art Society Conference, It was hotter than–hot! Arleney was napping in the motel so I decided to go cool off in a bar. I walked a ways and went into this little bar. There was this unforgettably barmaid. I swore if I could paint I’d try to paint her image . Well now, years later I am doing just that. Arleney took one look and told me “You are not going to post that!” So I just don’t know how I am going to get away with it. It is risqué but I obviously will have to deal with it. It is truly like her–wish I could remember her name—perhaps I will call the painting “One drink didn’t work, perhaps two”.— We loved Savannah!–olRoff————-Please note: When I was painting this I was thinking the year was in the late 1990. I later  learned it was 2002

So Proud

Monday, August 10th, 2015

I would love to do a painting of me when I was a boy getting his first bicycle. It was a beat up used one, but very special to me. It cost me $5.00 and the first thing I did was to paint it blue with a paint brush. (Can you imagine?) And that bicycle launched my Grit Weekly newspaper route. I was so proud!

Maybe I will paint again soon

Monday, August 10th, 2015

It has been a month or so since I painted anything. Perhaps I will try again soon. I so much envy those artists like Lyle Carbajal , Louis Vuittonet, Steven Chandler. There is so much to learn from them but most of all, I love the way they express themselves. I have yet to own a Lyle Carbajal but someday I hope to change that!—
